Dr Yahia Khairy passes away

GLOBAL: Dr Yahia Khairy Abdul Rahman, a pioneering figure in Islamic finance and a long-time friend to IFN, passed away on the 3rd August 2025 at the age of 81.

Originally from Cairo, Egypt, Dr Yahia moved to the US in the late 1960s where he later founded American Finance House – LARIBA in 1987 and LARIBA Bank of Whittier in 1998, championing interest-free banking in the country. He also played a key role in developing innovative Islamic finance products, including the first Islamic equity investment portfolio for the Dow Jones Islamic Index.

Beyond finance, Dr Yahia was deeply engaged in interfaith efforts and community-building across the globe. His legacy continues through his writings, institutions and lasting impact on the global Islamic finance industry.
