Mukhtar Hussain passes away

MALAYSIA: Mukhtar Hussain, the group general manager and head of the belt & road initiative and business corridors in Asia-Pacific at HSBC, passed away on the 2nd September 2025, confirmed the Asia School of Business where he was also a distinguished member of the board of governors and the chair of the president’s advisory council.

Mukhtar began his career at HSBC 38 years ago in London, moving to the UAE in 2007 to hold the position of deputy chairman and CEO of the bank’s global banking & markets in the Middle East. In 2009, he assumed the role of deputy chairman and CEO of HSBC Malaysia, and in 2018, was the chairman of HSBC Singapore.

Mukhtar leaves a legacy of wisdom, intelligence, kindness and compassion within the global banking industry and the Islamic finance sector – a sentiment confirmed by all who worked with him during his career.
